Event Details

The Harvard Ed Portal and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies are proud to present a film screening of Finding Babel followed by a discussion with director David Novack and Kate Rennebohm, a Ph.D. student in Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies. This event is in conjunction with the exhibition Romance and Reality: Posters from the Russian Revolution, marking the centennial of the Russian Revolution
Seventy-five years after the execution of Soviet writer Isaac Babel, his grandson, Andrei Malaev-Babel, journeys to Russia, Ukraine, and France to come closer to the grandfather he never met. In Finding Babel, haunting animations, candid encounters, and a rare glimpse at the KGB archives resurrect a lost literary hero for the twenty-first century.
David Novack is the director and a writer/producer of Finding Babel. In addition to directing, Novack is a Professor of Film at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design where he enjoys mentoring a new generation of filmmakers.
