ARTIST Q&A

Born: Northampton, MA

Currently lives: Western Mass

Title of artwork: Candle Dipping ((front)) Ribbon ((back))

What’s it about? Dipping Candles is a slightly older work that actually started as a landscape! I found myself getting too tight with my mark-making, so I began throwing colors around and following the gestures until it became this melted space. The title comes from the annual tradition of my elementary school — dipping candles for the holidays.

Where else can we find your work? IG is definitely the best place to keep up with my work or chat with me!

Where have you been finding inspiration as an artist lately? Recently my inspiration has come from romance, and kinship! A lot of my past work has revolved around isolation and loneliness, and (somewhat ironically in the global perspective), I’m finding that intimacy itself is the motivator for most of my work these days. I’m experiencing a connectedness to other QPoC that I’ve been in search of for a long time.

Favorite holiday tradition? Eating maple candy, and making dinner with my friends on New Year’s.

One new thing or practice that has been bringing you joy during COVID-19? My boyfriend.

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? There isn’t one that comes to mind :/

What would your last meal be? Hm probably some weird stuff that doesn’t go together like a fresh pretzel, blueberries (#boycottDriscolls), and ginger ice cream.

Go-to karaoke song? Jealous by Labrinth

Title / Author you would choose if it was your turn to host Book Club? Gemsigns by Stephanie Saulter
