SYDNEY MEYERS

Sydney is a designer who currently lives in Cambridge but grew up in the DC area. She moved up to Boston 6 years ago to study Industrial Design, and pursue her love of making physical things with a purpose. By day, she’s a Design Researcher/ UX designer at PTC on their augmented reality team; By night, she listens to loud music and draws ugly characters. In between, you can find her drinking iced coffee from Clover, playing guitar, taking pictures for her pigeon instagram account, or working in coffeeshops until they close. She loves design because of its inherent optimism to solve any problem, though her dream projects would be exploring memories, healthcare, or music.

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Seattle, WA

Currently lives: Cambridge, MA

Title of artwork: Cloud Five

What’s it about? “Cloud Five” is two humans up in the clouds giving each other a wholesome high five. Not sure how they got up there, but they are living in the moment and celebrating with a nice slap. I actually drew this as plans for a mural on my parent’s shed, but I’ve been told “it’s meant for a different spot” (a nice way of saying they don’t want me to paint their shed). So if anyone wants this as a mural, it’s ready to go!

Where else can we find your work? On my website, instagram, or any blank spot in my notebook!

Where have you been finding inspiration as an artist lately? My camera roll. I take a picture of anything that seems out of the ordinary when I’m out walking or biking, and it usually manifests as a future drawing. When you apply the irrelevant to the relevant there’s always an interesting outcome.

Favorite holiday tradition? Trying to find the weirdest gift for my family gift exchange. One year I just put $20 in a bag of garbage. I got my $20 back.

One new thing or practice that has been bringing you joy during COVID-19? I never saw it as practice until now, but I’ve picked up a lot of techniques after cooking so many new things these past months. It brings me joy to feel like I can be creative with food and make my own recipes.

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? The “People of Jamaica Plain” mural on Centre St. that was originally painted on the side of the Petal and Leaf florist shop. It captures all the color and greenery that I love about JP!

What would your last meal be? Fried chicken Manoa Poke bowl

Go-to karaoke song? My friend and I always sing “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, but we just end up laughing through the whole song.

Title / Author you would choose if it was your turn to host Book Club? Left to Our Own Devices by Margaret Morris! It’s such a great book with stories of people using technology in their unintended ways to better suit their needs.
