ARTIST Q&A

Born: Boston

Currently lives: South Queens, New York

Title of artwork: Earth

What’s it about? Over the past couple of years, I’ve been immersing myself in the world of astrology and its connections to my own cultural roots. Earth was created as part of a series exploring and expressing my love for different celestial bodies and planets. It is my favorite painting of the series because it is a reminder and reflection of home — when you look at Earth, I hope you are able to feel a deep sense of care and appreciation for the planet that houses us.

Where else can we find your work? I’m always updating my site and online shop! You can also catch me selling my art at the New England Open Market this September and November. 🙂

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? I’d have to say Jessie + Katey’s work on the house at 273 Western Avenue! Before moving to Boston, I used to visit the Allston-Brighton area often and I remember it being the first thing that stood out to me as I was exploring the neighborhood. I love vibrant, eye-catching work that can completely change your perception of a space and/or leave you intrigued and wondering more about it!

What would your last meal be? Ají de Gallina. So, so good.

If it was your turn to host book club, which title would you choose? The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, my favorite writer and architect turned writer and activist.

Go-to karaoke song? Anything Nicki Minaj. Did I already mention that I’m from Queens?!

Favorite place in Allston/Brighton for takeout? It’s a hard tie between Rhythm ‘n Wraps and Seoul Toppoki!

What have you learned about your creative practice over the last year? I’ve learned that you don’t always have to make “good” art. As an artist who sells my work, there’s often a lot of self-imposed pressure to create art that is marketable vs. creating for personal joy and exploration. I’m still learning to find a balance between the two so that I can always remember why I create – because it’s my happiest mode of expression and a form of self-care!

A piece of advice you would give to your pre-pandemic self?Don’t take community, physical proximity to others, and nature for granted! I feel instantly recharged being and working within community spaces, spending time with loved ones, and being mindful in nature. I don’t think I fully realized how important these simple things were to me until the pandemic happened.
