A place for experimentation, practice, and expression in collaboration with Harvard University Planning and Design.

A celebration of public art featuring hands-on workshops by Allston-Brighton artists Tianna Rivera and Nell Valle

THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THE ART!

The Zone 3 Community Sketchbook, located at The Grove in Allston (Western Ave & N. Harvard St across from Trader Joes) is a publicly accessible green space that has been reimagined into a new community asset where people can gather and express themselves artistically.

On Saturday, October 15 we gathered to turn the page on the sketchbook and created 200ft of new public art with the community.

Local artists Tianna Rivera and Nell Valle led the public in hands-on workshops where they learned the fundamentals of stenciling, large scale paint by number, and the process of creating an art installation from the ground up. While people got creative, they enjoyed live music, treats from Blackbird Doughnuts and other fun activities for all ages.

ABOUT THE ARTIST WORKSHOPS

Tianna’s art style is heavily influenced by typography and geometric shapes. Her installation invited visitors in to create flowers, shapes and characters out of paint and stencils. By using a paint by number technique, the mural acts as a large-scale coloring book that becomes a mosaic. As the layers of shapes built upon each other to create one unified piece, they grew to represent the colorful community. Tianna is an Allston-Brighton based artist and designer who is passionate about innovation, collaboration, and civic engagement.

Artist Nell Valle led the community through a collaborative paint-by-numbers approach to public art. Guests had the opportunity to contribute to the mural influenced by the artists’ characters and color style that serve as a reminder to our inner youth and exploration of creativity.

Nell is a freelance illustrator based in Allston-Brighton who graduated from MassArt. She has experience in comic illustration, public art, art gallery installation, and art instruction.

Beyond this event, the Community Sketchbook wall will be thought of as an ever-evolving community art wall, where people can leave their mark. There are chalkboards and chalk markers on either side of the murals for visitors to express themselves. We encourage you to engage and embrace this section for experimentation!
