ARTIST Q&A

Born: NYC

Currently lives: The North End

Title of artwork: Fruits

What’s it about? This was painted with gouache. Originally I was going to create a pattern out of all the fruit but I thought they looked so nice arranged in a rainbow of colors.

Where else can we find your work? On my Instagram (@caromallon) and website (carolinemallon.com) which will hopefully have a shop page soon. And I was one of the 2022 winners of the PBR art can contest, so maybe you’ll spot my work in a dive bar!

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? I really like the mural on the side of the Cambridge Antique Market. Particularly Elvira and the three guinea pigs.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? I recently came across some work by Mariko Kusumoto on Instagram and was excited to see she has a studio in MA.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Ideally with my eyes far away from a screen and amongst friends… Although sometimes it’s just some TV and couch time.

What was your top song for 2022? Little Death by the Beths

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? I’ve learned that it really calms me down. It really distracts me from over thinking whatever else is going on or causing me stress and I am very grateful for that.

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? I would tell myself to ease up on self-doubt. Don’t let failing at something stop you from trying again and share your work with people even though it makes you nervous! But I’ll give her some credit for making the mistakes and learning all the lessons I needed to get where I am now.

What is your dream project to work on? I have been joking (but not joking at all) about retiring and becoming a puppet maker. One day!
