ISABELLA PENNEY

Isabella Penney is an artist and art educator based in New England. Her work often consists ink drawings and woodblock prints that explore different varieties of line work to create dynamic images. Isabella is markedly inspired by films, classic cars, and cryptids. She graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a BFA in Illustration and is currently pursuing her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University. Her art has been featured in Massachusetts’s BigInk Exhibit and several shops in the greater Boston area.

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Melrose

Currently lives: Wilmington

Title of artwork: Bowie

What’s it about? This piece was a bit out of my element, I don’t normally work digitally but I had a lot fun with the process. David Bowie is a huge inspiration to me, he is the most alien of rock stars. I was very much inspired by photoshoots from the 70’s in his Ziggy Stardust era. In total the piece consists of 13,413 lines!

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Exploring art museums, coffee shops and getting snacks at Trader Joes

What was your top song for 2022? This Must Be the Place by Talking Heads

Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? Rhythm and Wraps

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? I’ve learned to let ideas come naturally and allow myself to have creative slumps. It’s okay to make mistakes, theres nowhere to go but up.

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? You already know what to do!

What is your dream project to work on? Illustrating children’s books and public murals.
