MUIDEEN OLAMIDE OGUNMOLA

Muideen Ogunmola is an artist with a unique style that reflects his perspective on fashion, culture, influenced by African art. His work is in a stylized, geometric style, that combines bold colors and vibrant patterns with the powerful and expressive elements of African art.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan in the 90s and early 2000s, Muideen was surrounded by the rich cultural heritage of the African American community. This had a profound impact on his artistic development and his desire to capture the beauty and complexity of his American experience through art.

What’s it about? Fashion, pop culture and exploring older art concepts of the portrait. “Girl with a Tulip” is my nod to “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? I love all the murals on the buildings in the area, especially the one in the parking lot attached to Scissor Sound.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow?Sam Fish (Exit Gallery). I met him this summer in his studio and thought his work was really interesting.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Hangout with Family

What was your top song for 2022? NAS – Once a Man, twice a child

Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? Holly Crab

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? That it is ever-changing and evolving depending on what is going on in my life.

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? Take your time and never feel rushed in your process.

What is your dream project to work on? A mural + installation would be my dream
