MITHSUCA BERRY

To Mithsuca Berry, creativity goes beyond technicality and into a way of living. At a young age, art was an extremely important tool in healing. Now, across mediums like illustration, mixed media, and radical art education, those stories can be told. “My goal as an artist is to take up as much space with black imagery as I can – fill it with images that couldn’t even exist in the constraints of our reality. I don’t have to make a world or time frame in which black bodies exist. They should exist anywhere our minds can take us.”

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Laval, Quebec, Canada

Currently lives: Cambridge, MA

Title of artwork: Ascension Project

What’s it about? Each piece provided is an extension of how my blackness has been there foundation for my enlightenment. It’s a deep dark struggle to be black in the US, and yet the experience has connected me to so many new truths about myself and the world around me. It’s an experience full of contrast, between accountability and healing.

Where else can we find your work? I’m everywhere!

Where have you been finding inspiration as an artist lately? I have reconnected to my body and sense of self, and the art flows just like that.

One thing you learned about your self or creative practice during COVID-19? That the systems I’ve worked under really pushed me to exhaustion. I realize my artwork had been held back by all my societal obligations and this persona of a role we play for the systems we work in. I didn’t get to tap into the many unturned abilities until the quarantine. I feel like many share this experience as we may have gone months or years believing one thing about our lives and practice, when in reality, there’s so much that’s missing. I feel inspired by the idea of still being able to get to know myself.

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? I haven’t been able to refresh my public art memory due to covid 🙁

What would your last meal be? A GIANT plate of By Chloes fancy fries! With chorizo and a giant Thai iced tea.
