CHRIS SAGEMAN

Chris Sageman, originally from Vermont is best known for his gestural drawings and paintings. His work is a combination of text and images sourced from everyday situations, the work is intuitive and unplanned. Most of his paintings/drawings begin with a simple phrase or idea for an image, something like a tagline from a commercial or an image on a billboard. His
paintings are meant to relay a feeling or mood specific to when the work itself was being made.

By not planning each painting out, mistakes and surprises become apart of the tools used to create each piece. While the work can appear to be sporadic and unorganized at a closer look there are underlying patterns, this is meant to mirror the confusion and serendipity people
experience within there everyday routines and habits.

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Burlington, VT
Currently lives: Brighton, MA

Title of artwork: The Kitchen Sink

What’s it about? This piece is a pen drawing that I scanned in and painted digitally. In most of my drawings I source text from everyday situations like advertisements that I might encounter on a billboard or the side of a truck. The objects I draw are usually things I am thinking about that day or week, where as the abstract forms/lines are much more intuitive and can be thought of as similar to lines on a map. They are used to connect the separate words and objects together in an often illogical way.

Where do you find your inspiration? Henry Taylor, Anthony Rianda, Ricardo Passaporte, and Danny Fox are some painters that I look at for inspiration. I find a lot of inspiration in little things, like a paragraph in a book, or sometimes just a particular part of a song, its not always visual. A lot of the time I get excited about weird advertisements or internet videos I’ll find. I think for me, it’s a certain feeling that overcomes me and I feel like I have to get it down on paper or canvas before I lose it.
