HAILEY PARK

Hailey Park is a local artist entering her senior year at Lesley University studying fine arts and beginning her graduate studies in art education. Though her work is usually influenced by ideas of nostalgia and sentimentality, she loves to venture into the world of surrealism and explore a more illustrative style. She’s mainly a printmaker, specializing in relief with a background knowledge of intaglio, monotype, and screenprint.

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Rochester, NY

Currently lives: Woburn, MA

Title of artwork: Hail the May Queen!

What’s it about? Inspired by the visuals of Ari Aster’s “Midsommar”, this print details the climactic finale of the film. The design is hand carved into a linoleum block and then a fade of various colors inspired by those used in the film are rolled on top to create an ombre effect on the finished print. Midsommar was one of my favorite movies of 2019 and so I sought out to create a piece that could fully emulate the intense emotion and expressive visuals found throughout the film.

Where else can we find your work? My art Instagram is @haileyj.arts but I can also be found over at Press 304 (@press.304)!

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? Recently I’ve been interested in Yu-Wen Wu’s “Lantern Stories” in the Greenway in Boston! The way the narrative lanterns light up the night sky is magical.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? Though he’s recently no longer located in Boston, Patrick Casey’s printmaking is always a source of inspiration for me.

What are fall activity are you looking forward to? Horror movie marathons with my friends and baking with lots of apples and pumpkins!

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? If I’m not sketching or brainstorming, I am probably reading up on anything and everything “witchy”.

What was your top song for 2021? I’ve pretty much got “Criminal” by Fiona Apple on a constant loop.

Favorite food spot in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? Getting the meatball and ricotta pizza at Stoked in Cambridge was part of the reason I made it through junior year.

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? I’ve learned that in order for my practice to grow, I have to try as many new things as possible. Allowing new methods, mediums, and ideas into my practice is making me a more well rounded and open-minded artist day by day!

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? Never. Stop. Creating. Never let the failure of one idea stand in the way of you creating bigger and better things.

What is your dream project to work on? I’d love to start a zine someday. Just a collective of cool art with a general theme to show the world. I’ve also always wanted to print my own custom tarot deck.
