ARTIST Q&A

Born: West Palm Beach, Florida

Currently lives: Somerville, MA

Title of artwork: Pancake Feast

What’s it about? This piece was inspired by a lemon ricotta pancake breakfast I made for a few friends who were visiting from out of town! They were staying with me overnight, so I figured we couldn’t go wrong with a homemade breakfast! I love the chance to cook for people, especially something sweet.

Where else can we find your work? juliaemiliani.com/shop & @juliaemiliani on IG

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area? So hard to pick just one! I love Rixy’s work all across Boston/Cambridge. Also love the Jessie and Katey mural at Zone 3, and Yenny Hernandez’s work currently up in the Prudential Center in Boston.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? At the moment, Pat Falco, Monique Aimee, James Weinberg, Cecilia East/West, Ayana Mack, Joelle Riffle, & Kit Collins, to name a few.

What are fall activity are you looking forward to? Transitioning from iced drinks to warm drinks. Plus, outerwear – love a good fall jacket.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Aimless comfort activities – trying out new recipes, knitting while watching Mad Men, spending time in my sketchbook, sleeping *a lot*.

What was your top song for 2021? Halah by Mazzy Star

Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? Dinner at the Ave, dessert at Fomu, drinks at the Sil

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years? As I get older, I’m learning when and how to say no projects that don’t feel aligned with my values, when to say yes to opportunities that do, and how to balance my art practice with the rest of my life. Also – a less glamorous answer but equally true – refining the business side of things – client management, negotiation, taxes, you name it.

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? Probably the same advice I’d give myself now – relax!

What is your dream project to work on? Solo gallery show of original paintings 🙂
