PATTY DEGRANDPRE

Patty deGrandpre’s work evolves from photos and images of common objects and scenes from my life and travels. She crops, deconstructs and layers imagery, blending abstraction with reality. For deGrandpre, anchoring each work with a recognizable image that suggests a narrative. A common identifiable object becomes the catalyst as it morphs from an expected pictorial to an unexpected abstraction. She makes sense of the subjective through thoughtful use of structure, form, and color.
deGrandpre received her BFA in Visual Design at University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth in 1987. She has participated in many shows both juried and invitational at regional and national levels as well as being featured in multiple periodicals. deGrandpre is a Core Artist member at Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, Ma.

ARTIST Q&A

Born: Salem, Massachusetts

Currently lives: Beverly, Massachusetts

Title of artwork: Blue Utah / Orange House

What’s it about? Inspired by cross country road trips throughout the west and southwest, this unique inkjet print was created by using deconstructed fragments of photographs of the terrain and landscape of Utah and New Mexico. The choice of blue was a deliberate choice to contrast the actual warm earth tones that are typical for that region. The whimsical orange house floats within the composition but is very out of context. The visual elements of this piece are layered and arranged to create a pictorial yet abstract landscape.
