ARTIST Q&A

Born: New York, NY

Currently lives: Allston, MA

Title of artwork: Lil Friendos

What’s it about? I found that drawing these little buddies really helps to take my mind off of stressful things and it gives me something to smile at. Over the years I’ve filled out a bunch of sketch books with these little friends, hopefully one of them brings a smile to your face too.

Where else can we find your work? You can see more of my work on my instagram @johnnykpc, or my website crowbody.com! I also play music in the band Cat Geography and my solo project Crowbody

Where is your favorite public art piece in the area?I really enjoy the Faces of Allston mural by Pete Cosmos at Aeronaut. The little rat bud is my spirit animal.

Who is your favorite Boston-area artist to follow? I Check out Lulu Henle (@tattulu), and Logan Rogers (@Logandrogers), both are fantastic tattoo artists working out of Pino Bros in Cambridge. As for local musical artists, I really dig Kitner, Choke Up and Divine Sweater

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off? Complaining that my cat doesn’t love me anymore because she’s sitting on my partner and then complaining when my cat sits on me because she loves me. That and rock climbing or writing songs.

What was your top song for 2021? According to spotify, it was Father (Part 1) by Trophy Scars. According to my heart, it was Careless Whisper by George Michael.

Favorite food spot in in Allston, Brighton or the surrounding area? Probably Lulu’s – I’ve eaten the short rib mac and cheese there an uncomfortable amount of times.

What have you learned about your creative practice in recent years?I don’t need to change my style to suit what I think other people want – just be myself

What is a piece of advice you would give to your past self as a young artist? You gotta draw a bunch of bad lines before you can draw a bunch of good lines, so keep at it!

What is your dream project to work on? I’d love to design my own clothing line – just silly simple designs on t-shirts, button-ups, posters etc. I’d also love to just disappear to a cabin or something in the middle of no where for a month or two so I could write and record an album.
